Energy Informatics
Energy Informatics is a brand-new initiative established by Department of Informatics and UiO:Energy at University of Oslo, Norway.
Energy informatics exploit the state-of-the-art ICT (information and communication technology) to tackle the global warming and climate change challenges. The scope of energy informatics includes computing and communications technologies and their applications for sustainable energy sectors (e.g., smart grid, solar power, wind energy, electric vehicles, energy, storage, smart cities, green data center, green computing).
Education
We started a new course INF5870/INF9870 "Energy Informatics" from Spring Semester in 2017. This course lay the foundations to understand where and how computer engineering techniques apply in the energy systems.
Key features of the course:
- Invited speakers from industry experts (e.g., Green Mountain, WindSim, Statnett, Hafslund, Statkraft, Powel)
- Invited speakers from the world-leading scientists in both energy and ICT domain
- Learn state-of-the-art ICT techniques for future energy systems
- Learn through assignments, programming and real datasets

Research
“Energy Informatics” studies state-of-the-art computer science for sustainable future energy systems. Our research interests include
- Smart Grid Communications, Control, Optimization and Cyber Security
- IoT/Fog/Cloud Computing for Smart Grid
- Green Computing and Energy Efficiency
- Big Data Analytics for Smart Energy Management
We have great interest in both theoretical and data-driven approaches. Some typical techniques include: control and optimization, game theory, data analytics, and machine learning. We are either a project coordinator or a key partner in the following research projects.
- SmartNEM (Smart Community Neighborhood - driven by Energy Informatics)
- IoTSec (Security in IoT for Smart Grids)
- TIDENET (Theoretical and Data-driven Approaches for Energy-efficient Networks
- ProNET (Protection of Power Electronically Interfaced LV Distributed Generation Networks)
- CPS Lab at UiO for Cyber Physical Systems
Master Projects
We have many master projects within the scope of energy informatics, for example,
- Machine leaning and deep learning for wind energy forecasting
- Green Cloud and Wind-driven Clouds: investigating the benefits achievable from co-locating data centers and wind farms
- Big Data for Weather: Big Weather Data Storage and Analysis and Prediction
- Big Data Analytics for Weather Forecasting
- Electric Vehicles: How Many Charging Stations Needed for e-Cars in Oslo by 2020?
